New York City-based photographer Rodney Smith explores the serene and the surreal through black & white photography, using simple subjects, natural lighting and some outstanding compositions. The moments he tends to capture are unique and very thought provoking. They convey a strange and dream-like beauty that entices or even challenges the viewer with subtle hints of wit. Aside the otherworldly sensibilities, Rodney addresses the psychological issues between photographer and subject, which form the underpinnings of his great photography.
He is among the few photographers who continue to publish, exhibit, lecture, and teach while also keeping up on commercial assignment schedules. In contrast to the pseudo “realism” of a lot of fashion and advertising photography, Smith creates images that foster a sense of serenity and well-being. “My interest is not in what is new or fashionable, but rather what endures, and is graceful, stylish and beautiful,” Smith says.
